We currently have an exciting direct hire opportunity for a Unix Administrator in Lansing, MI. The Unix Administrator is a top-level technical expert in architecture, implementation and administration of Unix/Linux systems, Enterprise Storage System (Storage Area Networks-SAN), and Enterprise Backup and Recovery system. They provide technical expertise in a variety of complex computer system projects with a primary focus on the reliable and efficient procurement and implementation of server hardware, operating system software and storage devices.

 

Responsibilities and prospects for the Unix Administrator include:

  • Responsible to ensure adherence to Industry and company standards and established Best Practices, in support of internal department strategies.
  • Combines knowledge of Multiple Hardware platforms, Operating System platforms, System Administration, Local/Wide area networks, Storage Area Networks and Packaged Software to ensure Health System wide Application Integration and Data Security.
  • Perform Unix (HP, IBM, Sun, others as required) and Linux (Red Hat, others as required) Server System Administration duties to include Architecture, Installation/Upgrades of Hardware and Operating System. Corresponding Configuration Management and Change Control documentation.
  • Perform administration of Enterprise Storage system including Storage Area Networks (SAN), Arrays, SAN fabric and Switches.
  • Responsible for ensuring server backups/restores are scheduled, performed and secured for assigned systems.
  • Develop procedures pertinent to System Administration, Enterprise Storage administration and Data Backup and Restore.
  • Understand and maintain a thorough knowledge of hospital information systems. Analyze how computerized information systems can be applied to patient care to reduce cost, increase revenue, report on quality, and improve customer service.
  • Interface with Customer departments in order to assist them in the determination of information content and systems appropriate to meet their needs.
  • Assist with Researching, Analysis, Planning, Identifying Solution, Implementation, System Integration and Usage to support Health System requirements. Develop plans and solutions necessary to meet needs for informational access, security and integration in consultation with the Application Support teams, Security, Enterprise Architecture team, Technical Systems teams, Interface team and Project Management Office.
  • Lead project teams for selection, implementation, and maintenance of information technology to support Health System and specific hospital departmental plans.
  • Develop clear and concise documentation, instruction manuals, and audit trails of program changes in accordance with the departmental and programming standards.
  • Continually expand knowledge and expertise in Information services, new technologies and developments, and project management methodologies.
  • Collaborate and Communicate with IT staff, Computer system vendors, and client user organizations to assure quality computer programs.

Qualifications and educational requirements for the Unix Administrator include:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively more responsible or expansive experience in Unix and Linux System Administration, including technical support and documentation.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing Enterprise Storage System/Storage Array Network (SAN) systems.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with an Enterprise Backup and Recovery System.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience using Enterprise Monitoring tools.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills for complex system problem resolution.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skill, to interact with customers, IT Leadership, Staff and Vendors.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills, to assist in presenting information to staff and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with many people of differing professional levels; to be involved in multiple projects simultaneously, and to succeed in an environment of competing priorities.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and quality improvement.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience Preferred:
  • 3 years’ experience in IBM Power Systems.
  • 3 years’ experience in Red Hat Linux System Administration.
  • Scripting languages and C/C++ programming skills.
  • Unix System Administration certification.
  • Experience using Sun/STK tape libraries and ASM a plus.
  • Experience in Networking, Security, Firewalls.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Project Management and Customer Relationship Management skills.
  • Best Practices experience (e.g. Six Sigma, 5S and/or LEAN certification preferred).
  • Knowledge and understanding of IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Infrastructure Lifecycle Management processes and solutions.
  • Healthcare industry experience.
  • HIPAA Security & other Healthcare regulations knowledge.
