The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System is seeking Peer Support Apprentice (PSA) or PeerSpecialist (PA) to work within Mental Health Service. The (PSA) and (PS)participate as full members of multidisciplinary Mental Health treatment teamsproviding clinical care while focusing on recovery, rehabilitation andcommunity integration.
Both positions serve as recovery agents by providing, advocating and facilitating effective recovery based services utilizing a wide variety of recovery-oriented tools. For example, both the PSAs and PSs partner with veterans to develop and implement personal recovery plans that incorporate overall health and well-being goals in addition to mental health symptom management goals through individual and group contact. They will assist veterans in identifying their existing skills, strengths, and supports in order to help achieve their goals. They will orient and educate veterans about mental health and recovery-based services in the community. They will also educate about, and act as liaisons for, various community resources and supports to help empower the veteran and reduce stigma. These positions will assist in monitoring progress, making timely reports of progress and potential problems to the appropriate treatment teams.
Both the Peer Support Apprentice and Peer Specialist positions will operate in a variety of settings (e.g., inpatient, outpatient, and the community) and will assist veterans with multiple needs (e.g., housing, employment, volunteering, recreation, etc.).
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. You must be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces.
2. You must have recovered from OR are in the processing ofrecovering from a mental health condition.
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of theposition you must also meet the the following experience and/or educationrequirements for the position.
Specialized Experience:
GS: 5. To qualify as a Peer Support Apprentice. As a PeerSupport Apprentice hired to become a certified Peer Specialist, a Veteran musthave spent a minimum of 1 year in recovery from a mental health condition. In all cases, Peer Support Apprentices mustactively pursue becoming certified as required to serve as a Peer Specialist by38 U.S.C. 7402(b)(13)(B). At the time ofappointment, the supervisor will provide the Peer Support Apprentice with thewritten requirements for becoming certified, the date by which he or she mustbecome certified, and the consequences for not becoming certified by thedeadline. NOTE: Failure to becomecertified by the prescribed date will result in removal from this GS-102occupation and may result in termination of employment.
GS-6. To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-6 gradeLevel you must meet the minimum qualification AND be certified as a PeerSpecialist AND you must have at least 1 year of specialized experienceequivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5). Specialized experience isprogressively responsible, post-personal mental health recovery experience as amentor providing counseling to support peers in mental health and/or addictionrecovery, a recovery advocate directly involved with consumers of mental healthservices, a psychiatric therapy aide, or equivalent work involving in-personcommunication to support others in mental health recovery.
GS-7.To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-7 grade levelyou must meet the minimum qualifications AND be certified as a Peer SpecialistAND you candidates must have at least 1 year of specialized experienceequivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6). Specialized experience isprogressively responsible, post-personal mental health recovery experience as amentor providing counseling to support peers in mental health and/or addictionrecovery, a recovery advocate directly involved with consumers of mental healthservices, a psychiatric therapy aide, or equivalent work involving in-personcommunication to support others in mental health recovery.
GS-8. To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-8 gradelevel you must meet the minimum qualifications AND be a certified PeerSpecialist AND you must have at least 1 year of specialized experienceequivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7). To substitute experience for education:
GS-5. There is no substitution of education for Peer SupportAssistant.
GS-6. To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-6 gradelevel you must meet the minimum qualifications AND be a certified PeerSpecialist AND Six (6) months of graduate education or a 1-year post-bachelorsdegree internship meets the requirements for GS-6.
GS-7. To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-7 gradelevel you must meet the minimum qualifications AND be a certified PeerSpecialist AND have one full year of graduate education.
GS-8. To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-8 gradelevel you must meet the minimum qualifications AND be a certified PeerSpecialist AND have one and one/half years of graduate education.
GS-9. To qualify as a Peer Specialist at the GS-9 grade level you must meet the minimum qualifications AND be a certified Peer Specialist AND have two full years of graduate education or a masters degree.
NOTE: Graduate education or a post-bachelors degree internship meets the specialized experience required for GS-6/9 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study.If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

KSA 1 - Demonstrate relevant knowledge of the signs and symptomsof mental illness (i.e., thoughts of harm toward self or others, aggressivetalk and behavior, auditory and visual hallucinations, isolation, etc.)
KSA 2- Demonstrate the ability and willingness to help veteransaddress symptoms using evidence supported recovery-based strategies they havelearned or used during their own mental health recovery.
KSA 3- Develop and use effective communication skills to teachand engage veterans problem solving and conflict resolution strategies tosupport their mental health recovery.
KSA 4- Assist veterans in addressing their symptoms throughmodeling and inspiring them through your own recovery story and learned skills.
KSA 5- Apply knowledge of effective counseling methods, includingcrisis management, case management, short-term and more in-depth counseling,and of specific evidence-based or best practice approaches to helping veteranswith behavioral or adjustment disorders.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, Typically, the employeewill sit to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending,carrying of light items (such as books, papers), accessing transportation,and/or driving government vehicle. The work requires patience and control ofemotions. The work may require occasional use of appropriate techniques tophysically retrain clients who present a danger to self or others.
