TheAcute Inpatient Mental Health (AIMH) Nursing Assistant is proficient inproviding specialized nursing care to adult psychiatric patients includinggeriatric patients. The AIMH Nursing Assistant provides routine care formentally impaired or emotionally disturbed patients, and have a basicunderstanding of mental health disorders as well as basic medical problems andare able to acknowledge and report abnormal findings. The AIMH Nursing Assistantworks under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN).
TheAIMH Nursing Assistant helps patients with activities of daily living such asbathing, shaving, dressing, and eating. They assist with mobility i.e.,ambulation. The AIMH Nursing Assistant escort patients to and from off unitappointments. The AIMH Nursing Assistant spends time providing therapeuticinteractions with patients and observing patient behavior. Other dutiesincluding camera monitoring, environment of care safety checks, perform EKGsand assist the RN with the admission process. The AIMH Nursing Assistant willassist staff in the management of a patients disruptive behavior. The AIMHNursing Assistant possesses a patient centered focus, the ability tocommunicate effectively with patients and members of the inpatient staff.
Preferred Experience: One yearexperience in a mental health setting and CNA certification preferred.
Physical Requirements: Thisposition requires Heavy Lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straightpulling (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required;walking & standing 8-12 hours; repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required;ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; nearvision correctable @ 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in oneeye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability todistinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted).Transferring patientsand objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patientsand contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing inisolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent mayoccasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium,dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible,sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations,able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

For GS-5, applicants must possess one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Additionally, a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelors degree with courses related to the occupation may be qualifying. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the position of Nursing Assistant. Qualifying specialized experience may include non-professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical, nursing or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as: providing personal nursing care such as providing pre and post-operative care, support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus, caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording and reporting changes in their behavior and providing reassurance and encouragement, assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities.
